Small, Brave Things

You do not need a whole evening to change the temperature.

The best evenings, the ones we remember, rarely begin with a plan. They begin with a single choice — to turn toward, not away. To ask a real question. To lower the lights and mean it.

What follows is not a script. It is a way of thinking about the room you are already in, and the person already in it with you.

We often mistake intensity for depth. But intensity is loud, and depth is quiet. Depth is the second question after the polite first one. Depth is staying still.

Try this, tonight: one candle, no phones, one hour. Ask each other only questions that begin with "when." See what happens.
